Loneliness

One day, quite at the beginning, I search the web for tai chi and find a school in the town center which I go to check out on a Wednesday evening after teaching, thinking that some extra curricular company might do me good. Each evening, before the classes, there is a half hour of sitting meditation which I am happy to join, but it is not in silence; the teacher guides her students in an ongoing stream of instructions, which I do not understand.

I sit with closed eyes, breathing in and out, hearing the rise and fall of the inflections in the teacher’s voice. And so, I sit in meditation listening to German.

On Sunday mornings the church bells sound long, loud and clear. In the silence that follows I hear the song of a bird I know from Gaia House. It is the cuckoo.
